The trio of travelers find themselves in a precarious situation as the recall's effects deepen.

-Long summary-

Colin leans back and exhales out of boredom and maybe just a smidgen of frustration. The children had all gone off somewhere, and while he’s all for them exploring and learning things on their own, it wouldn’t have killed them to check in every so often would it? He then grimaces at his own thoughts. He sounds totally like a father now doesn’t he? Though to be fair he is someone’s father so maybe this is natural evolution or degeneration of his brain. Sure, those days where he had no one to worry about other than himself were nice, and he would be a liar if he tried to insinuate that things weren’t simpler back then, but there’s something sublime about creating something and watching it toddle along and come into its own. Despite himself not being sure if he can even hack being a Dad, the feelings of wanting to nurture, teach, and support his son all just flooded in naturally –a floodgate that exists in every person and knows when the waters need to flow free. It is exactly why he acts contrary to his nature of being a mild mannered almost coward. Fighting in the war that had nearly killed him was more a means to an end. He knew he and Anna Rose would be found out eventually, and that their lives would become that much more difficult. Agape and love might be what makes magician’s lives easier, but it certainly would not and did not do he and Van’s mother any favors. Still they called what they had between one another love, and rather than seeing themselves as helpless because of the resulting product the two instead saw themselves as stronger from the experience. They gained a strength that is required to protect what is important. Ironic how they only got stronger when they gained a weakness –their child. Still, Colin wouldn’t have it any other way. Through rehabilitating his son’s damaged psych he would eventually find his mother –and his wife. He still feels odd thinking of her that way since they had never officially gotten married, but there is still time to fix that. Now however, he would have to flex his protective muscle, as the other reason why he is so vexed has arrived.

A magician wearing an all black trench coat and fedora stands in his midst, silently regarding him as if he is waiting for the farseer to finish his retrospective before taking any action. Colin sighs and warily gets to his feet. He comments that compared to the other guys who had come for them earlier he seems a bit more polite. He does hate guys who feel like they have to be in a hurry and then rush everyone else. Life is hard enough as is without rushing pointlessly from one thing to the next.  Might as well enjoy things right?

The magician steps forward and cricks his neck. He looks to be middle aged with narrow hazel eyes and a thin mustache. He tips the fedora and admits that he is one of those people he dislikes…as he’s in a hurry today, and apologizes as he asks Colin to die quickly. The consolation is of course it will be the last thing he’ll ever be forced to do for someone else. Colin smirks and asks what is it that he fights for?  Butcher?  Power? What drives them?

The magician stares at Colin with a blank expression and replies that he just wants the ‘ringing’ to stop. Colin is taken aback for a moment by this answer, which leaves him open for a near miss lighting attack. The farseer’s eyes warn him to the changing current of magic and he manages to dive out of the way just in time. The magician stalks toward him with the same blank expression and asks if he understand what he means? Ever since the ‘recall’ happened, there has been an incessant buzzing sensation in his head. A thousand needles sticking into the puncture holes in his brain and grinding in those holes, sometimes gently, but usually with great force. For one reason or another though, he just gets the ‘feeling’ that killing him and the ‘angel’ will stop this agony….or at least put him out of his misery.

Colin grits his teeth as he realizes even magicians who have higher aptitude for keeping themselves despite the ‘recall’ are susceptible to its effects if the exposure continues for a prolonged time. The idiot and Roysé would be fine since they don’t use agape, but his son –Van would eventually end up like this. As his father this is something he cannot allow ---he will not allow. To that end he must survive and protect him –all of them until they have found the strength to defeat Butcher. Until their floodgates have opened.

The farseer cracks his knuckles and says that he is disappointed. So he’s going to kill him because he thinks it’ll do something about his headache? C’mon. At least if he’s gonna wave around death threats he should have a cool reason to go along with it. The lighting magician grits his teeth and summons a bolt of energy in his palm. The farseer realizes that this is chaos magic, which means any number of things could happen should he release its energy. The last thing he wants to do is to give a lunatic with a death wish a gun to fire around wildly before turning it on himself. Even with his eyes, the amount of possibilities that come with using chaos magic are so great that he would not be able to keep up with them.

Colin ducks low and sprints at the magician to knock him off his feet. He is surprised when his opponent weaves out of his way and fires back with a lighting aura projected from his body. Colin is shocked and lands flat on his back. He spies the ball of chaos magic growing bigger, and realizes that his opponent really does intend to take them both out. However simply cutting his concentration doesn’t seem like it’ll do the trick. In a twist of cruel irony, his ‘headache’ only seems to sharpen his focus. So then the next option is finding a means of negating at least some of the damage the chaos magic will do.

The farseer glances at the entrance leading outside and complies the possibilities of what his enemy will do. He’s placed himself to keep anyone from being able to come and he from leaving. So then the name of the game becomes ‘how to use this guy’s concentration against him’. Getting an idea, Colin takes a bit of fallen debris from the earlier electric strike and tosses it at the magician. The debris explodes in a puff of smoke mere inches from the magician’s face and he smiles evilly asking if the farseer is out of ideas? Colin tilts his head and replies that he’s just testing a theory….as in are magicians good at multitasking? He strides powerfully forward toward the magician who glares and flares up his electric agape.  To his surprise the lighting dances around the orb of chaos magic and randomly flashes around the room. Colin smirks as he asks if the magician’s headache is keeping him from thinking straight? Chaos magic is lots of boom and flash but it requires a good chunk of effort and focus to get off.  It only makes sense that if he wants to focus on getting a suicidal amount of chaos magic that using other magic to subjugate him would only take away from the effect. Thanks to his single-minded focus on stopping the ‘ringing’, the lighting magic is warping around the chaos magic. Conducting a shield to deflect distanced attacks might be easy enough, but when the threat is up close and personal it becomes a lot harder to concentrate doesn’t it?

Colin feels little jolts that stop him in his place several times, but he finishes his power stride to the magician and grabs the arm holding down the chaos magic. He then whispers in the magician’s ear that he’s going to administer a little bit of medicine –and it may hurt a little bit. He force-rams the energy ball of chaos magic into the magician’s chest. There is a ‘whumph’ sound effect before the building quakes and the air fills with electric heat. The building’s windows crash and Colin is paralyzed by electric shocks. The magician flies out the entrance and lands in a crumpled heap outside, as the farseer tries to stay on his feet, coughing up blood and phlegm from the intense wave of chaos magic. He takes a moment to regain his senses, and blearily stumbles towards his three ‘kids’ –knowing that trouble never comes singly. He has to find them before the other side does..

Meanwhile underground Van steps back and nearly bump into Lazaro after seeing the sight of people drowned by Butcher’s slaves. The God-to-be shifts his weight to let Van fall, but the farseer manages to keep himself steady. Roysé comments that she can hear rushing water nearby as Lazaro whistles and adds that water isn’t the only thing flowing here. Van feels a chill run up his spine and turns around sharply demanding whomever is shadowing the group to reveal themselves. A lone figure steps into the clearing pinning the trio between a cliff and a rushing drop and themselves. The person is a woman with her head tilted at an unnatural angle. She murmurs that she can still hear ‘the music’, and commands for the trio to stop singing ‘that song’. Lazaro and Roysé trade bewildered glances, and Van shakes his head in pity. He states that she had lost herself due to the ‘recall’ and its effects. Just a little agape had changed her from loving mother to executioner of her children. He can see it due to his eyes being augmented by his own magic. She can still hear the lullaby she hummed to them in her head even now, long after their demise.

Lazaro turns to her and regards the woman in annoyance. The lives of her children should have been worth more than an increase of agape. There is nothing that ‘love’ shouldn’t be able to overcome! He prepares his alchemy to put the woman out of her misery when she suddenly shrieks and emanates an aura of wind that assaults the trio. Lazaro grabs hold of Roysé’s hand and digs his hand into the ground, leaving Van to shoulder the elements on his own. The boy’s expression hardens and he walks towards the woman who has covered her ears and begs for it to stop. Van is stuck between a fissure of his fear and resolution. Fear that this is eventually what he will be reduced to, and resolution that he won’t let it happen. He falls face forward however and is nearly carted off the cliff by the wind when Royce grabs him with her free hand and begs him not to let go. Van grits his teeth –isn’t this why he had become the living embodiment of a taboo? A farseer who uses agape? He wants to save people right? This power of his isn’t just for destruction. He has to prove that to the others…to Guy, Kani, Reid, his father, and most importantly himself. Van slackens his grip on his ‘sister’s’ hand despite her protests and once again tries to struggle to the woman, getting on all fours and digging his fingers into the ground. He finally reaches her and wraps his arms around her saying it’ll be fine. He’ll do something about it if it’s the last thing he does…she doesn’t need to hurt anymore.

The woman looks up at him, and with a serene expression asks for mercy in the next world.

Van feels a pulse and then coughs up blood. The woman has used her palm to force wind at Van with enough force to break a rib. Van flops backward and rolls with the wind back to the edge of the cliff teetering right at the edge until Lazaro lets go of his perch and grabs him. He curses the farseer for being an idiot, and turns up his alchemy to keep them from falling. The woman falls in a heap, a peaceful smile on her face –freedom from the recall at last. Her leftover agape bellows sadly and pushes the trio to the literal edge, it’s lover now dead.

Colin who heard the commotion above makes his way underground and finds the scene…Lazaro and Roysé on the edge of collapse, and his injured son unconscious behind them. To make matters worse, he knows well that Butcher will have reinforcements following them down soon, which means escaping to the surface is impossible. Staring out at the river desperately for ideas, Colin is stumped until he looks deep into the water. He suddenly gets an idea, and rushes into the fray, grabbing his son and in what seems to be light speed, jump into the river disappearing under the water. Lazaro stands dumbfounded for a moment before realizing that he has let his concentration slip. Wait---the wind…it died down? Why? He also doesn’t feel the bloodthirsty presence of Butcher’s dolls anymore….what had happened? The God to be wrinkles his brow and then asks his beloved to hold her breath. He knows they won’t die (at least for now) thanks for the angel remnance, but it’s still going to be a bumpy ride. Roysé stares up at him questioningly, but does what he asks without question. Lazaro nods and joins his bitter enemy and his son in the frigid river.

Meanwhile in Shrewlund within the King’s Palace, Butcher breathes heavily as Hiram looks on. The human adviser beside himself in wonderment that a simple ‘magician’ could take on a sentient and apparently cause him significant harm…is nothing short of amazing. Butcher wipes blood from his lips as the Grimm golem stares down at him with empty eyes. Butcher stands straight and grins maniacally. Hiram blinks and shudders as a unnerving feeling subjugates his very soul.

The sentinent being announces that he has learned all he needs about ‘passion’, and will begin his counterattack in earnest. He requests that Grimm ‘do try not to die too quickly’.
