WD Rule six is entitled 'Reunions are things that everyone looks forward to, though sometimes you may have to force yourself into looking forward to them.'

Previous rule five: 'Be steadfast in even the falsest of feelings, and evasive in your lies.'

Next rule seven: Gang violence is something that eventually becomes everyone's problem.

-Short summary-

Ruka explains her reasons for picking up Lukas and Meifa, and an not entirely happy reunion is crashed by the apperance of not Mugen.

-Long summary-

The way the current situation looks for Meifa and Lukas is as follows.

1) Ruka is happy to see them and doesn’t use her power as the leader of one of the most powerful groups in the underground to put them underground.

2) Ruka is unhappy to see them and they die. Considering how things had gone the last time she and Lukas had met, the re-spy fears this result is the most likely.

3) Nothing happens.

Putting all hopeful dreams of unlikely occurrences out to pasture, Lukas figures they’re dealing with a ‘1’ or ‘2’ situation. Basically, Ruka uses her power and ends them, or doesn’t and they get to go back to the world above. Her last very cryptic comment bothers him more than it should, but if one were to get acquainted with their history, it would make sense that he doesn’t just write it off as a joke.

3 years ago, Ruka Deguchi was a civilian from hell, much like he is now. Her father is or was the blood thirsty don of the Li se xing zuo until he had met his very bloody end at Ruka’s hand. Before that she had used some of his connections to get connected to the Govt and several of it’s enemies to become an information broker, along with her group of subordinates that acted as a ‘bizzaro’ version of Sector Seven. To say that Ruka had (has?) family problems is an unkind understatement, as she had run away from home due to avoid becoming a killer. Mugen—Matilde’s interference had ended up getting her caught, and starting a huge war between the mafia—specifically Arthur Penbur, and the Li se xing zuo which had resulted in Chizuo Asahara being killed by his daughter, Penbur escaping, and there being a power vacuum in the underworld. Daiki Asahara; Ruka’s older half brother had said he’d run things until she could, so Lukas is surprised not to see him anywhere. As far as Lukas can see, Ruka is running the show which means he and Meifa’s fate are in her hands.

Which in an ordinary situation would seem like a good thing since Ruka’s group and Sector Seven for the most part get along, but nothing is ever what it seems when dealing with spies and the underground, especially when one mixes in feelings. Ruka had fallen in love with Lukas at almost first sight, and despite him having a girlfriend and continuously ducking Ruka’s attempts to sway him she hadn’t relented her efforts in trying to get him. After the Asahara mission had ended he finally specifically told her why he can’t be her man, and she hadn’t taken it well. Lukas knows all too well that he attracts females who are great at holding grudges and not so good at being forgiving (All the more reason he treasures Yelena), so he’s rightfully worried that Ruka will take this chance to enact revenge against him.

However the limo ride is silent (besides the pounding in Lukas’s head spurred by his possibly overthinking their situation), and they soon arrive in an underground garage.  Ruka’s door opens and she steps out of the car, and invites Meifa and Lukas to do the same. The two step out of the Limo and are greeted by two more nondescript mystery men who greet Ruka as ‘Ruka-sama’ and ask how her ride was. She replies that it was fine, and she will be going up with her guests. The two glance in Meifa and Lukas’s direction as if they’re sizing them up for how much trouble they might cause, but they don’t vocalize this and simply bow greeting them and welcoming them to the Blood manor. Lukas grimaces at the name while Meifa grins and asks if they’re going to see vampires? Ruka smirks and points to a door  and requests the two to follow her. They step into a small elevator and head up for what seems to be a silent eternity and step out into a well-lit hallway. Ruka motions for the two to follow her and they walk down a long hallway to a set of double doors. Ruka opens them and inside is a spacious office with a nice view of the city behind a large desk. A couch is on one side of the room, and two chairs are in front of the desk. Lukas glances to his right and sees a fountain with something in Japanese inscribed on it. He notices another couch and the form of a young man lying on it with a newspaper on his face. Meifa perks up upon seeing him, and calls out to Tariq who hears his name and sits up slowly while removing the news paper from his face.

Tariq is wearing a business suit and his normally puffy hair is tied in a puffy tail. His skin is a shade darker than Lukas’s giving away his African (specifically Ethiopian) heritage. He looks in their direction and a small smile creeps up on his face. He asks Meifa how she’s doing, and she replies with genuine enthusiasm that she’s ‘not shitty’, following up with asking him where the hell he’s been. Tariq sits up and grins answering that he’s been underground…literally. Meifa nods and asks him if he’s been keeping in shape? Tariq stands and walks over to her, and it’s now that Lukas realizes he’s managed to get taller than even him. He asks if Meifa wants to test him? Meifa cracks her knuckles and asks if he thinks he can handle her? She’s been home with her mom so she needs a bit of a warm up before taking on Not Mugen. Ruka claps her hands and it’s only now the group realizes she’s already sitting behind the desk (on a cushion since otherwise Ruka wouldn’t be able to see over it), and looks ready to do business.

Tariq puts his hands in his pockets and sighs. He would love to take Meifa up on her offer, but it seems the boss wants to talk to them. He’ll be hanging around somewhere in the manor so once they’re done she can come and look him up. He’ll be glad to give her the ass whupping she wants so bad. Meifa scowls at Ruka but doesn’t say anything, nodding to Tariq and promising to catch up with him once things are over. He walks out of the room and closes the door quietly after he’s out. Ruka offers Lukas and Meifa a seat, and the two do so though they exercise a noticeable amount of caution.

Ruka notes this and smiles, asking if they think she’s going to hurt them? That’s rude since they are friends and all. Meifa crosses her arms and states she’s not afraid of being hurt or anything since that’s ‘dipshit’s’ job. He’s probably only scared cause the two of them have had a lovers pissing contest three years ago, and now that she’s in position to put the hurt on him, he thinks she might do it. Ruka eyes Lukas for a moment, and asks without turning to him if he really believes she’d hold a grudge over something so minor for such a long time? Lukas manages to stop entertaining notions of hanging Meifa long enough to answer that he’s not sure. Ruka sighs and leans back in her chair for a moment while nodding slowly. To be honest that does make sense, and she did fall for him because of that pragmatism…so she’d be more offended if he just thought that he’d be back in her good graces without doing a little legwork first. Truth be told though, she really isn’t all that interested in harming them  since the net profit for that would be purely on a personal level. Lukas shudders inwardly at this revelation, as it makes it obvious that Ruka for a least a little bit of time had entertained the thought of inflicting pain on him and Meifa to get back at him. Just like she knows his pragmatism, he knows her wiliness, and knows that depending on how this conversation goes, they could very well end up back in the hotseat. Ruka continues that she didn’t pick them up out of a sense of betrayal or camaraderie, no…she had picked them up for one simple reason.

She then glares at the two with a killing intent heavy enough to cause them momentary weakness, the venom from her voice and eyes almost taking physical form. She picked them up because they were in her fucking way. She had men stationed around for a specific job, and then they come waltzing in and nearly compromise everything. Now add that to the fact that she is still pissed about three years ago, and just starting her time of the month and they are damned lucky she just didn’t have them shot right then and there. She warns them that this conversation will proceed under the notion that they are hostile to her cause, and should she feel the need –will use underhanded, unnecessary and unholy amounts of pain to ensure they do not get in her way again. So the duo should think hard about anything they say until they leave, be it on foot or body bag.

As usual Meifa is undaunted and puts her legs up on the desk. If she intended to kill them, they’d be dead. So she can knock her ‘baddest bitch’ act off. ‘Sides, it’s as she said….killing them isn’t going to do her a damn bit of good in the long run, and if she’s still pissed off at dipshit (something she doesn’t understand, since he’s….dipshit.), that means she still has the hots for him. Now if she wants to go mano a mano, that’s a whole different story altogether. Maybe Meifa would die, maybe Ruka would die. Maybe the whole fucking building would collapse. No matter how she looks at it, Meifa figures there’s no outcome that’s one hundred percent, and since she intends to head back to her Mom in France once this whole not Mugen shit is done with it means she’s got to fight at any opportunity so she doesn’t die. Simply put Ruka shouldn’t make threats she doesn’t intend on following up, and she damn better not think they’re just going to shit themselves cause she’s giving them the stink eye. At least…she’s not going to shit herself.

Both women eye Lukas who suddenly feels very small. He had walked into a championship fight, and in a cruel example of gender reversal was the card girl for the match between the two heavyweights. In an attempt to regain control of the situation and reclaim just a little bit of his tattered male pride, he clears his throat and asks what Ruka meant about a job? Obviously he’s not quite as connected as he used to be so…

Ruka sighs and leans back in her chair giving Meifa a look which she ignores. She opens a drawer in her desk and tosses a file at Lukas. He flips it open and is surprised to see a surveillance pictures of not Mugen at different locales, indicating that she had been able to spy on him for some time now. Lukas looks up from the file and Ruka is seemingly peering into his eyes. For a moment they are silent until Ruka begins to explain that she had already known about not Mugen way before the American Govt had put them on their shit list. Of course since his extracurricular activities have nothing to do with her, she didn’t really care….until Uncle Sam came crawling on his knees asking if perhaps he could pay for her willing participation? They seem to want not Mugen alive, and are willing to go as far as paying an underground organization such as the Li se xing zuo (off the books of course), to help them out.

Lukas whistles and closes the file. That’s pretty damn desperate….which is a good thing and bad thing. Good since it means not Mugen is going to find it that much harder to keep hidden without making mistakes, and bad since now it means the competition for grabbing him just got that much more complicated. He surmises that she had caught wind of his little scheme, and came to probably knock off the persons making the deal, and swoop not Mugen up herself.

Ruka confirms this and states how odd she thought this deal had been, but in their business, she had seen all kinds of strange things. She then opens the desk drawer again and finds a box of Virginia Slims, takes out a slim cigarette and lights it repeating how lucky they are that she didn’t just have them shot.  Lukas thanks her and asks what the plan is now? She takes a long drag and exhales smoke, thinking for a moment before answering. If not Mugen didn’t see their extraction, chances are he’s still going to show up, and they’ll still be able to capture him. If not they’ll just have to pick up his trail again. Not a big deal since he’s actually somewhat predictable when he’s not killing people.

Lukas then suddenly asks Ruka if he can have a favor, which catches her off guard. He states that he needs to be the one to bring not Mugen down, and asks if Ruka will back down? She doesn’t seem to care about the American Govt and is after the money right? If he has to pay  her back personally, he’ll do it if she forgets she saw them today and backs off of not Mugen. Ruka stares at him, dumbfounded for a few moments before asking if he’s out of his mind. Why would she do that? If anything she could just take his money, get paid by the Govt and do whatever the hell she wants. Lukas nods and explains that he can’t really say why he needs to get not Mugen first. It just needs to happen, and she can make it happen so he’s asking her. Meifa applauds asking him when his balls finally dropped, and Ruka angrily picks up a glass ashtray on the side of her desk in preparation to throw it. So he wants her to back off and lose a financially lucrative endeavor for ‘some reason he can’t state’? And he really thinks she’s just going to agree? Maybe he misunderstands her. She is not interested in him anymore, and he is only alive now because she won’t gain anything from killing him. What could he offer her now that he’s out of the Govt? Nothing. Not. A. Damn. Thing. So he’d better step up his game if he….

Ruka suddenly stops her tirade and places the ashtray on the table. She leans back in her chair and for a moment uses her leg to swivel around before speaking again. She thinks she can make a deal that would mutually benefit both of their parties, and if he’s willing to hear her out perhaps she can leave not Mugen alone. Lukas agrees too quickly to her deal, something he realizes as soon as he sees her expression. He begins to think better of it and ask for more details, but Ruka’s cellphone rings and she answers it. She says something in Japanese to the person on the receiver, and her expression changes quickly from surprise to readiness. She hangs up the phone after giving more orders in Japanese and blows out air while giving Lukas and Meifa an even look. Lukas asks what’s going on, and she reveals that not Mugen showed up to the site as they planned, but had taken the precaution of coming prepared with a getaway driver. Her men had been ready for a battle on foot, but not Mugen had surprised them by coming in a vehicle and mowing a few of them down. He had quickly gotten away which had started a chase between him and her men, which is currently occurring. She smiles and asks if Lukas still wants his chance? Lukas nods and she stands, commanding the two to follow her. She has a good idea where he’d be heading if he’s going out of town and figures it’s now or never if she wants to make good on her part of the deal. Lukas starts to ask what he’ll have to do in return, but she has already passed them to the door and in a swift gesture asks if they’re coming or not. Meifa leaves immediately which leaves Lukas no choice but to follow suit. Ruka makes another call to Tariq and tells him he will be back up, and that he should meet them at the car. Like magic, when they get back to the limo, Tariq is there and they are off.

They reach the back allies of a small town which is close to a bridge that leads out of state. Lukas wonders how they’ll find not Mugen, but he doesn’t need to for long as he sees an abandoned car in an alley that has been riddled with bullet holes. Tariq gets out of the limo and promises to find not Mugen, before moving deeper into the concrete jungle. Lukas glares at Ruka and asks about their deal, in which she responds with a cordial smile, asking if he should really waste time here? She promised she would back off of not Mugen….not that her subordinates would. Of course if they find him first then she won’t object or try to take him back either. Lukas growls and motions to Meifa to follow him, but Meifa asks dipshit to think for a moment. If not Mugen is trying to escape, and  the only set of wheels he had has been wrecked too much to move, wouldn’t he then try to look for a new set of wheels…that they just graciously provided him?

Lukas feels his blood turn cold as he turns to see a familiar hoodied shape walking towards them. Meifa assumes her stance and with a wry smile comments how she loves being right. Ruka’s expression is unreadable as she mutters how they fell right into his trap. The re spy turns and with a stern expression adds that they all underestimated not Mugen. The question is what is the compensation for this mistake?

The intruder in their midst looks up from under his hoodie and regards the group with an almost familiar sense of bloodlust and a smidgen of intrigue, the blood from his freshest kill splattering from his fingertips being the only sound echoing in the alley.
