New WD rule one

Page history last edited by Sakaki 10 years, 9 months ago

WD rule one is entitled 'At least the fall after having the rug pulled from under you is mercifully short'.

Previous rule two eighty four: All right, you guys don't have to go home, but you can't stay here. (As much as we'd like you to.)

Next rule two: The ratio between how well you slept and how well your day will go is undeniable.

-Short summary-

Three years after disbanding his beloved team, Lukas Diethel metaphorically and literally finds himself back in the heat of things.

-Long summary-

It's a humid summer night in Arlington Virginia. The perfect night to be at home with a six pack and bad reality TV. However, for a certain Stanely Reicher it means having another argument with higher ups about security regulations. Lately it seems all the Govt politicians can agree on is that there needs to constantly be something to argue about. Today's hot (pun intended) topic is the rash of high profile murders that had been happening a little too often for the liking of Upper management.

Apparently a terrorist had decided to take up his grievances with the Govt directly by mercilessly killing higher ups in otherwise innocuous places. A major had been slain outside of his house in broad daylight, a politician had met his end in an elevator adjacent from his office, and a commissioner had fallen asleep at the wheel...permanently at a gas station. The MO is pretty simple too -cuts, bruises, shattering and breaking. Whomever this person is it's clear he has a personal vendetta against his enemies. Then there's the fact that while there have been witnesses, most of them don't see much more than a white dragon hoodie before the perp leaves the scene. That is when the witnesses aren't too busy shitting bricks to talk.

So now here at the Defense Intelligence Agency a late meeting had been convened to talk about the Govt's new critic....if he could be called as such since there is nothing left behind at these scenes to indicate that the perp has anything other than a real issue controlling his bloodlust. Obviously since all of the dead guys are in Govt positions his beef has to be with Uncle Sam, but why? The meeting had gone per the course; a lot of finger pointing and macho posturing, but very little in developing leads and getting things done. In the end things finished the way they started, and Reicher siting a stomach ache decided to get his black suits and amscray. He'll be damned if he's gonna spend a hot evening listening to those guys blowing out even more hot air. He has a plane to catch to Pennsylvania if he wants to have face time with his family. If he has any luck at all, he figures he can still hop on a plane out of Virginia to get home in time to get a few hours of shut eye.

Reicher is no more than a cog in the rigid hierarchy of the CIA, so he doesn't think too hard about the murders of guys who's checks had amounts on them longer than his name. After all, he's barely worth looking at, much less killing. It's a fact he knows all too well, since making changes to the ineffectively run Govt is a pain in the ass when you're the little guy, so although he has a few of the black suits with him he doesn't really see them as necessary since he doubts he'll ever meet his maker or white hoodie in person.

So when the first black suit drops needless to say he's not exactly in the 'fight' frame of mind.

Reicher hears the noisy 'splish' that comes with a body falling in it's own blood, and turns around. Black suit two already has his gun out and unloads it into what seems to be empty, hot, night air. He turns to his boss and begins to tell him to run to the car, but is cut short when a human shape suddenly blurs into his peripheral vision. He turns and sees a young man, probably no more than eighteen in a white hoodie that still billows from sudden movement. He stands back for a moment before turning his gun on the newcomer....a moment too long. He is already upon the black suit and belts him hard with a 'knife hand' -a taekwondo technique. The guy goes down hard, but the newcomer doesn't give the black suit a finishing blow. He instead turns to Reicher and smiles, the sort of smile you might imagine a cartoon Lion having when he corners a gazelle. Reicher turns to run, but newcomer is on him in a flash, and in another one has sliced his jugular with a blade at his waist. Reicher collapses to his knees as his head hits the pavement. He watches his blood flow away from him as he hears more blacksuits coming from the building. The newcomer glances in their direction and with a smirk turns and retreats from the newest murder scene.

Some time later in a place far away, Lukas Diethel awakens in unfamilar territory greeted by darkness.

He shakes his head and tries to move his arms, but finds they've been tied behind him.  The oper--ex operative sighs and surmises he's been kidnapped, something that hasn't happened in oh, three years? Give or take. Though to be fair he had only been kidnapped once during his old job and that had been by one Karoline Mason who desired to make a point to her younger twin sister and his ex partner Meifa. Despite that, he's pretty much become desentizied to kidnapping, beating, and maybe torture. He's not too sure if living with Meifa would be considered a form of torture so that's more or less a toss up.

Lukas recounts what he can remember up until his 'relocation'. He had gotten up in the morning and watched the 'ordinary' news which had reported that CIA deputy director Stanley Reicher had been murdered, his death being chalked up to the serial Govt worker killings. He then looked up College information, though he's still not sure if he wants to go despite several schools falling over themselves to have him attend. With his 'active memory' standardized tests and school work was no more than a chore to him. Lukas has the uncanny ability to remember anything he's read, even if he only reads it once. It had been an ability that had gotten him into and out of trouble, and had been the reason why he had the pleasure of working with Sector Seven for an entire year. Nowadays though, it had been more or less relegated to sliding him through tests and being used for other somewhat sketchy endeavors. Anyway, he got bored of the college hustle and prepared to meet his girlfriend at the airport.

Yelena Alekseyevna Volkov is Lukas's soon-to-be no longer long distance relationship. She had gone home to Russia during the days of Sector Seven to be with her father who had lost his wife to an accident, and came to be at her boyfriend's side during the whole Asahara incident. After the team had disbanded, she went back to her homeland, but was returning now to the states permanently. Lukas who had managed to score a driver's license during the three year gap planned to go to the airport to pick her up, but had been picked up and....

Placed here.

Lukas can tell he's moving and quickly figures that his kidnappers have a reason to have him on the move. He still can't really see, and isn't sure if speaking out is the best thing to do in this case. The best thing to do here is to act like he's still down for the count and hope his captors drop a hint he can use to figure out where he is, and more importantly why he's here. Lukas resigns himself to going incognito until suddenly he feels something being tugged off his head and a dim light assaults his eyes.

'You were right, nee-sama' a voice says in almost complete monotone. Once his eyes adjust, Lukas looks up and sees....not a whole lot since apparently his glasses have been taken. Another voice asks the first one to give the young man his glasses so that they can converse properly and after a few moments of shuffling and other noises Lukas can't identify, his glasses are put firmly (emphasis on firmly.) On his face. Lukas looks up at the person who had returned his eye wear, and is eye to glass with a white haired, dark eyed beauty. He frowns for a moment however, surprised that a young looking girl is a kidnapper, but more importantly that she's pretty familiar looking. Even with her strange hair color, he can tell she's Asian, and probably around his age. She looks a smidgen malnourished as her eyes are sunken and her frame looks a little small. She stares down at Lukas with an unmistakable amount of contempt in her eyes, which only makes her that much more familiar to him. Another voice behind her thanks her for replacing his glasses and asks that she stand back. The girl nods and moves so that the owner of the voice and Lukas are eye to eye. Lukas's eyebrow rises as he is now face to face with another Asian girl, but this one is older and healthier looking. She has long black hair done up in two tails at the side of her head and wears capri pants and a blue dress shirt and golden tie. She has sandals on, and her eyes are green, though Lukas isn't sure if that's her natural color, and she mischievously smiles while making a 'peace' sign. She then asks Lukas if he had a good nap?

Lukas comments that he'd be in a better position to answer if he weren't tied up, and the girl laughs out loud. She replies that his sense of humor is still 'cutting edge'. Lukas catches something in her sentence and asks about the 'still' part. They've met? He's still a normie when it comes to remembering faces, so she'd have to remind him. The girl looks aghast and pouts, asking how he could forget her when she promised they'd work together someday? Sure it's been three years, but she thought he'd at least make more of an effort to remember his future bosses! The cogs start turning in Lukas's head and his grogginess dissipates. Three years ago? Working together? He can recall someone saying something like that three years ago, but...that can't be this woman...?

The girl extends her arm and introduces herself as 'Matilde Ngai'. She then remembers Lukas is tied up and snickers. The ex operative fails to find this funny and asks if she's who he thinks she is. Matilde claps and bats her eyes, asking if he's inquiring about her being 'Mugen'? The same 'Mugen' who was there during the Asahara incident? If he is then 'Gold star'! Lukas balks and shakes his head in disbelief. She's 'Mugen'? 'Satan's child'?! Besides the fact that she's a..she, which pretty much flies in the face of everything he knows and believes about the terrorist, she looks so exceedingly normal! How can someone who looks the way she does do the things Mugen has?

Lukas stops his inner turmoil long enough to see that Matilde is staring at him with a strange look in her eyes. A look that instantly sends shivers down his spine. It's some parts sexual lust, some parts bloodlust, some parts boredom, and some parts pure unfiltered evil. She's deciding whether she wants to go back on her deal, sodomize him and then toss him out of the truck....or something along those lines. Lukas very quickly realizes that despite her appearance she truly is Mugen, and that it is in his best interest to keep her from changing her mind. He changes subjects and asks about whatever job she has for him, secretly hoping she'll decide against doing anything that he'll regret.

Matilde smiles warmly (something that's actually more unsettling than her gaze before.) and corrects him. A 'job' indicates that they'll work together until it's duration is over and then part ways. No, no. She's got something more permanent in mind. See, she had learned a great deal about Sector Seven and their works during their short year stint in the Govt. To be honest, not much impresses her, but they had. Taking on the mob? The World Destruction theorem? Hell, he had even managed to capture Arthur Penbur not once, but twice. Well...that second time was more of an almost than anything, but it's still impressive. With a resume like that, she'd have to be crazy to pass them up. So now she's going to hire them to be her personal mob squad so to speak, and although she is asking, Lukas really isn't in a position to refuse. He asks her what she means by this, and Matilde looks genuinely surprised. She turns to the white haired girl and asks if he's serious? To which the girl shrugs quickly. Matilde stands up and walks over to Lukas, bending down and stroking his cheeks. She then asks if he hasn't ever wondered why he and his buddies haven't been killed over this three year hiatus? Considering some of the things they've done and seen, and the fact that the US Govt isn't exactly everyone's friend, he's got to have wondered why no one has served him a bullet on rye.

Truth be told, Lukas had wondered about that the first couple of months, but had  more or less let it slide since worrying about it too much was life threatening. Literally. If he was all bent out of shape about being shot, he wouldn't be able to function properly and think straight should the situation actually come to occur. He then asks Matilde if she's saying she had something to do with him not being shot? Matilde stops stroking his cheek and looks around them innocently. She replies 'maaaybe', extending the syllables in an effort to sound cute. Lukas takes this as a yes, and asks why she would help them? Satans child tilts her head and repeats slowly that she wants to hire---er enslave his group. Something like that isn't possible if they're dead after all. If his hands were free, Lukas would have smacked his forehead for asking an idiotic question like that. He then asks how she did it, and she shrugs a shoulder while looking aside. 'That really doesn't matter'. She replies. She then goes on to state the important part of her revelation: that their protection had expired and now all sorts of very nasty people were after him and his co-workers. Lukas's eyes widen and he stares up at Matilde, asking in a whisper if she's insinuating something will happen to his friends?! Matilde looks bored again and asks him how she would know that since she's here and they're wherever the hell they are.

Meanwhile, on a stretch of highway in Texas a 2006 Hyundai sonata sits on the side of the road with smoke coming out of it's open hood. An African American woman sits behind the wheel with an annoyed look on her face. She has an over sized pair of sunglasses on and a beat hat on her head. She has an assortment of bangles on her right arm and a crucifix necklace on, resting on a vest with a white short sleeved shirt under it. She honks the horn at the person looking under the hood which causes him to jump up and nearly bang his head. He curses at her to knock that shit off, and blame her shitty preference in cars for them being stranded. She flips him the bird, and the young man comes around to the passenger side and tells her to come out and help. He wears a NY nicks baseball cap and has a pink polo shirt and black jeans on. He has sunglasses on and what seems to be a lollipop stick in his mouth, and his blond hair is shoulder length and tied in a pony tail. The girl tells him to call roadside assistance, and he tells 'Mo' that he's got this handled. Mo complains that he said that an hour ago too and they're still fucking here. She then begins to dial them herself when the guy snatches the phone and pockets it. Mo demands her phone back, and the guy goads her to come and get it. She lunges at him through from the driver's side and he backs away. Mo screams his  name- 'Heike' with murder on her mind, but he playfully backs away again and beckons her to come out the car. Mo growls that she should have left him at that gas station when she had the chance. Heike makes bambi eyes at her and replies that she loves him too much to do that, and Mo asks if he would bet on that? The banter stops when a truck suddenly stops and pulls behind them. Mo eyes the truck warily from the rear-view mirror, and Heike gets closer and returns to where he was by the hood. A white male steps out and walks towards the two, his brown cowboy boots, red backwards baseball cap, blue jeans and white sleeveless top adorning a face without any remarkable features. He asks Heike if he can be of any assistance, and he declines. The man asks again, this time walking closer to him via the driver's side of the car and Heike declines. Rather than leaving however, he whips out a snub nose revolver and prepares to fire when Mo opens the door suddenly, hitting him in the back of his legs and causing him to stumble. Heike takes this chance to take the tire iron and smack their intruder in the forehead, bringing him down to his knees. He looks up to see Mo standing over him with a glock and a face indicating a nasty disposition. Heike leans on the open drivers side door and advises their new buddy to start talking or his girlfriend will start shooting. The man waves profusely claiming that the Roscoe flats gang had heard from the Colombian cruisers drug cartel that it's open season on the two of them. Heike and Mo exchange glances and Heike recalls that both of those organizations are full of guys who would love to attend his funeral. He had been protected by the feds before getting burned, but then got protection from Sector Seven, which he's been out of for three years now. Why are these guys being so brazen now of all times? Mo orders the man to get up and ziptie himself, and orders him to get in the trunk. She remembers seeing him at the gas station they stopped at, and it was probably him who did something to her car in order to get them to stop. In exchange they'd take his truck and get to town, and maybe...just maybe come back for him. Heike grins and says to their would be assailant that this isn't a bad deal. At least he's not dead!

Meanwhile in Kilkenny, Ireland Nolan Connor rests at home feeling under the weather. He is in charge of a public institution as it's chief custodian, but had decided to take a rare day off when he woke up with a headache. Ever since Sector Seven had broken up three years ago, the neat freak had holed up in his homeland of Ireland and taken small jobs to get his mind off of his old team, and had met with limited success. Chiaki who had come with him was a constant pillar of support for him, but he'd be remiss to say that he doesn't miss the days of being with everyone...even Ricca 'soot witch' Miele who he often got into fights over cleanliness with. He suddenly remembers that she had lost an appendage in their last great mission, and wonders how she is now? A sudden buzz on his cellphone shakes his thoughts and he checks it to see a text from Chiaki. The girl can't talk so she communicates through text message, and Nolan had gotten used to having his phone with him at all times. What he figures to be a morning message from Chiaki turns out to be something much more tragic however....his eyes widen as she texts him a picture of the facility where he would have been working if he had gone in this morning and sees that half of it has been leveled. Chiaki's message says that Scotland yard had found remnants of a bomb set on the third floor...which is where his office is located. Nolan breaks out in a cold sweat....someone is after him.

Back in an unknown location in an unknown truck, Matilde crosses her arms and thoughtfully blows air. She claims not to like lying, and admits that Lukas's friends could very well be very dead now that the protection had expired. She doesn't really know since it's not like she can hop all over the world looking for them. Of course she'd rather have all of them alive but these things happen. Lukas begins to panic but then an inner voice bitch smacks his consciousness and shakes it up a bit. He hadn't thought of them every day for the last three years. Why is that? Is it because he doesn't care about them? No! Is it because he can't do anything for them? Maybe a little! But the main reason why he hadn't spent every second of the last three years concerned about his team is because he knows them, and he knows their ablity! If something pops up, they'd smack it the hell back down. It's because they are who they are he was able to live in relative comfort this whole time!

Lukas thanks...himself, and takes a deep breath. He then looks Matilde in the eye and proclaims that he has come to two conclusions. Matilde looks pleased and sits down beside him, asking what they are. One, that she's a pervert who enjoys seeing him being tied up. After all she had gone out of her way to get a truck like this so he can't see outside and wouldn't be able to trace his location by sight. He's also unarmed and wouldn't be able to take on Matilde and Mizuki Asahara in a fight on his own. He addresses this last part at the white haired girl who's expression doesn't change as she stares him down. As such there's no real need for him to be tied up outside of her own perverted inclinations. Two, whatever enemies are coming after him are also coming after her. Why else wouldn't she just have met him in one location? He can figure from the slight turns the truck is making that they've been going in alternating circles --alternating enough so that no one would immediately catch on to the pattern. She's doing all of this because if she stays in one place she risks being shot as well, which means her real 'job' is probably having the ex- Sector Seven agents act as her body guards.

Matilde laughs again, and makes a game show ding noise. She says that he's pretty much entirely right, and that she wants him and his men to protect her. She has all kinds of things she needs to do before she dies, and it won't do if she's shot before she's done. In essence they're all in this boat together, she figures they'd might as well ride it out to sea right? Lukas points out that she needs them more than they need her, and Matilde concurs or at least she would if it weren't for the fact that she has some knowledge of the World Destruction theorem. She knows Lukas wants more than anything to know more about Arthur Penbur's work and what it was truly intended for. She then adds cryptically that his 'shitty little formula' is only the tip of the iceberg. Lukas frowns and glances at her, but all he gets in response is Matilde putting her hands up like a begging puppy. The ex operative states that he'll need time to think about it, especially since he's not sure if everyone is alive. If he could be sure of that much it would be a big motivator....

Satan's child catches the hint and stands up. She glares at him and reminds the ex-operative that she is the boss here which means she uses them. Lukas grins and replies that he's not saying she has to do anything. Matilde smirks and says she'll make some calls with her contacts to confirm whether his friends are dead or alive and get back to him. At that time she'll need a response to whether he'll take her offer or not....not that he has a real choice here. Lukas begrudgingly agrees, and Matilde commands Mizuki to untie him. She does so without complaint, though her look of genuine contempt doesn't fade. Lukas stands up and stretches his arms, and asks Matilde to take him home so he can pick his girlfriend up at the airport. Matilde replies with a huge grin and a shout to the driver (who's name is apparently Wargle), to stop the car and allow their guest to get out. The truck comes to a slow stop, and Matilde opens the back door to reveal that they are at the airport. Lukas stares slackjawed at Matilde who flashes him the peace sign before literally kicking him out of their ride. She then waves goodbye and adds that she took the liberty of putting her number in his cellphone. She promises to contact him once she has leads, and that he should take real good care not to die before then. Lukas rages and complains that his car is still back at his fucking house!! How is he supposed to get his girlfriend and her luggage back to his place?! Unfortunately the truck is out of sight and Lukas is out of luck. The operative curses under his breath and glances at his cellphone's display. He is barely on time to meet Yelena, which means Matilde had arranged for their little meeting to take up this much time. Despite how much he hates her right now, he admits a certain level of props should go to Satan's child, who had probably spent weeks planning, spying and shadowing him to get this meet off the ground. A certain amount of props, fear and respect would have to be paid....later.

Dashing into the airport, Lukas realizes Yelena hadn't called him once. Now most guys would take this as a bad sign, but not him. Yelena has an otherworldly worldliness about her. One could mistake it as blind dedication, but that is oversimplifying their relationship. Yelena could be an operative in her own right as she could easily learn all she needs about a person from watching them, listening to them argue or talk, reading what they write, etc. Mind you this isn't to say that these forms of communication have to be directed at her. She had learned a lot about Lukas from his co-workers and his behavior, and had more or less shambled up a nearly perfect profile of him. As such she doesn't need to be jealous or petty, as she knows his emotional matrix so well that there's no need for those feelings. If he was late there was/is a good reason for it. There's no need to call since she knows as soon as he can make it he will be there for her. Even during the Asahara incident where he elected to fight for another woman's cause, she knew full well that while there may be some residual feelings like 'love' between them, it wasn't enough to threaten her position. In a way it's scary how well she knows him, how well she connects with him...

In any case Lukas finds Yelena sitting by a terminal listening to her ipod. The ex operative has to stop for a moment and simply watch his girlfriend from afar. He had talked to her on skype during the three years they were separated, but nothing prepared him for seeing her in the flesh. Like him, she's eighteen now, and her curly sunshine blond hair now reaches to the middle of her back. She is wearing a short jacket  despite the warm weather in the area, though under this is a one piece dress shirt with an image of the statue of liberty. Her toes and fingers are adorned in blue polish and on her feet are a pair of black open toed heels. Lukas's attention is drawn to her lips which are slightly open as she munches on potato chips and nods her head to the music. Two suitcases sit beside her, and she has a small handbag sitting on her lap. Taken aback by her maturation, Lukas finds himself walking towards her until he realizes he's standing beside her rolling suitcase and only a few inches away. Yelena turns and says that he should take a picture, since they last longer. Her English still has a slight Russian accent, but it's slightly improved from when she left, and the operative notices it. Lukas manages to fight down a blush and offers his greeting. She smiles and he gets lost in her blue eyes before she asks if he's okay? He looks like he's been tied up for a few hours? Is this some new American thing? Lukas comes back to himself and shakes his head. He contemplates keeping his meeting with Matilde to himself, but realizes Yelena would find out eventually anyway, so he'd might as well come clean.

After a long explanation, Yelena looks thoughtful and asks what he intends to do? Lukas sighs and replies that he isn't sure. He had bought a little bit of time, but this whole situation doesn't feel real to him. Three years of ordinary life, and here he is again being swept up into danger and intrigue. He wants to pinch himself and make sure he's not dreaming, and maybe make sure she didn't spike his drinks or something. In any case he'd wait for her to call and---

Yelena shakes her head and asks her boyfriend to be honest with himself. This is exactly what he wants isn't it? Lukas blinks and Yelena stares at him hard for a few moments before continuing. He wants this sort of life. The danger, the mystery...all of it. She could tell during their skype chats that going to college, starting a family and finding a nine to five are the furthest things from his mind. Matilde could have come to him amicably without the risks involved and he probably would have taken the job anyway. She doesn't doubt that he really does want to make sure everyone is alive before he takes her word, but she knows this is exactly what he was hoping for. He's already considering what kind of things he could do once he says yes to her isn't he? Lukas looks away from her for a moment and then meets her gaze silently agreeing. Yelena assures him that she is with him through everything, the good and the bad, but he will need to be honest with himself if he really intends to do this. Hiding anything from himself is worse than hiding things from her, or the team should they be alive and in the same predicament. Aside from that, has he even given thought to whether they want to do this again? Lukas begins to reply but quickly shuts up, realizing he hadn't. Yelena stands and offers her boyfriend a hand, and tells him to take one thing at a time. Lukas takes her hand and promises her that he will, and that he has some unfortunate news about their ride. Yelena narrows her eyes, and Lukas curses Matilde one more time before explaining about how they'd probably need to get the cash to take a cab home.

Lille, France. A group of unscrupulous looking fellows gather at an outdoor restaurant and discuss (in French) a certain killer opportunity. Apparently the French underworld had heard on the grapevine that a certain woman...more specifically her daughter was the target of a hit that would bring in major moolah. The kid is about eighteen and lives in Bordeaux with her mother, the woman in question. Although no one is sure exactly why the kid is worth so much dead, the paycheck is so fat that these cats can't pass it up even if they wanted to. The three discuss how to approach this very deadly job until one of them notices that it is deathly quiet. The three all notice that no one else is around, and wonder what the deal is until a silent bullet lodges itself in one man's forehead. The other two get up and demand for their assailant to show themselves. Instead another bullet makes friends with the other man's cerebral cortex, and he's down for the count. The other dude figures it's time to high tail it out of there, but before he can a young woman stops him by standing in his path. The woman wears a top hat and her eyes are done in smoky black eyeliner. Her orange hair is cut in a pixy do and she wears a black coat and puffy skirt and carries a fashion cane with the head of an eagle at it's tip. Her purple eyes burn into the man as she asks in French if he has any last wishes. The man quickly figures that she is the sniper and lunges, but one more head shot proves him wrong. He collapses inches away from the woman, who grinds her shoe on his head. She then dials a number on her cellphone and thanks 'Paola' for a job well done. Paola asks what they should do next, and the young woman sighs, tipping her tophat to one side.

She tells Paola to inform 'Ricky' that they will be going to Bordeaux, since her sister that 'little bitch Meifa' can't seem to protect their mother without her help. Paola confirms this and hangs up the phone,  as Karoline Mason flicks her cane and proclaims that at least the last moments of their meaningless lives had meant something....even if it was only as after dinner entertainment.
