WD Spy rule two seventy nine is entitled 'Expecting the unexpected can also mean completely missing the obvious.'

Previous rule two seventy eight: Those who have something they believe in find themselves on trial more often than those who are guilty of wrongdoing.

Next rule two eighty:  It's rare to see a downcast face on a person who's always looking forward.

-Short summary-

With Sector seven's time together slowly coming to an end, Meifa makes a decision regarding her future plans and invites her sister. Meanwhile, another party begins a plot that also involves the future of the team...

-Long summary-

Oddly enough, the day after Sector seven's fate had been handed down featured a dazzling sun without the uncomfortable humidity. Considering the current time of year this may not seem strange, but one would think that the day after being told that you and your friends have to pack up your things and leave your home of almost a year in only six days that it could at least rain to complete the dreary atmosphere. Just goes to show that no matter what trivial things humans are enduring, the sun has a job to do and it will get-r-done despite how crappy one is feeling.

However, 'crappy' is not the word to describe one Karoline Mason's current mood. To quite the contrary, she's actually feeling pretty chipper today especially when compared with her normal mood. Now that isn't to say that Karol is normally an emotional wreck, since she does smile when things (and sometimes people) go boom, but today she's on a high that is not only natural but completely free of moral baggage. Her normal dark Goth loli attire has been changed to what one would describe as 'light gothic'; all the frills and lace, ex nay on the black. Her hair is down, and though she normally dyes her hair white to keep from looking like Meifa, today little streaks of carrot orange is showing through as if it wants to kiss the sunlight it hasn't seen for so long. Most of all, Karoline is...well, it's hard to say this with a straight face, but she's skipping

Like a teenage girl who just confessed to a boy she likes, Karol is skipping and humming a lively tune that she's probably making up as she goes along. Paola and Ricky are a few steps behind as if they don't want to be seen with her; although their distance is mostly out of disbelief. Despite spending a few years with Karol, they had never seen her in such a good mood, ever. Ever. Every so often she'll stop and glance around at them and with both of her eyes glistening in the sunlight invites them to keep pace with her. They both nod and do so for a while before her radiance blinds them causing the two to step back. Paola is practicing cautious optimism with this new Karoline, considering who she's going to meet, while Ricky as stoic as ever simply expresses his enthusiasm for their boss's happiness.

The three arrive at a fountain, to find Meifa sitting alone although there are several people gazing into the fountain and kids running about. Karoline strides over to her sister and with a big smile oozing with cheerfulness she asks 'How ya goin?' Meifa glares up at her older sister and mumbles a greeting back. Karol ignores her and goes on about how sunny it is today and how she and the 'henches' (a word she never uses), were planning on hitting the beach today. She glances at Meifa and noting she's wearing a black skull hoodie along with black jeans and high tops, along with her black fingernail polish, hair parted over one eye, and dour expression asks if someone died. Meifa glowers for a moment and replies quickly that no one has died, but she'd be more than happy to kill her. Karol laughs this off and with an 'oh dear' quickly states her sister is much too weak to do anything at all to her, especially now that she has to be requainted with a good friend of hers known as depth perception.  She then expresses her condolences about Sector seven being disbanded, and asks what her little sister plans on doing now that she's essentially without a job?

Meifa smirks and points out that she could get a job with her sister, to which Karoline drops the nice-girl act and quickly asks if she would like to be crushed here in the park. Meifa asks if Karol has been googling 'Famous anime phrases from 2011' and if she has to not use them in normal conversation. The two glare at one another, as Ricky and Paola sigh....with relief. At least deep down, Karol and Meifa will always have a mutual sense of reprehension for one another. Suddenly they hear Lukas's voice complains that he's had enough of this, and from behind he Heike, and Nolan march by in annoyance. Nolan concurs complaining that he only came because he thought Meifa and Karoline would make up. If they wanted to see them fight for the millionth time, they could have just met at home. Heike simply glares at Meifa and limps away. Lukas gives a quick wink to Paola and Ricky, and on comprehending what he's trying to do they to say they have something to do and leave with the Sector seven team. Karol glances after them and wonders why everyone left in such a hurry? Meifa groans and asks if 'dipshit' could be any worse at acting....besides that, isn't he in the drama club? She then motions to Karol to follow her and the two walk for a moment before reaching a bench where Freddy their mom is sitting.

Karol immediately glares at her sister, but cordially greets her mother in French. Freddy responds in kind and nods over to the seat beside her and invites her daughters to sit down. Karol starts to say she has something to do, but the invitation becomes a command. Pouting, the mercenary sits down along with her younger sister and the three stare aimlessly into the park before Meifa announces that she'll be going home with their mother, and she wants her sister to come too.

Karol's eyes widen, but she turns away and declines the offer. She's too dangerous to travel around with. Meifa turns up her nose and calls her sister a coward, which she immediately denies. Meifa begins to mimic a chicken's clucking to which she threatens to rip her spine out of her body and use it for dental floss. Meifa dares her to, and this banter goes on for a few moments until Freddy slams the two girl's heads together and bilingually tells them to shut their mouths. She then asks her older daughter why she'd say such a thing, to which she replies she's a mercenary. It's the reason she hadn't gone to look for their mother with Meifa at first, and the reason she can't go with them now. Besides, even if she could turn down work there's another reason why she can't go with them to France. Meifa and Freddy look at her expectantly, and Karoline asks them to promise they won't hate her once she tells them the reason. Mother and daughter glance at one another, and nod.

Karoline explains that she's 'passed her date', so to speak. To her there's a window one has to reconcile with anyone, be it a mom, a dad or a sibling. Of course this window varies from person to person, which is why Meifa has no problem making amends with their mom and dad, but Karol's window had long since closed. She implores them to understand that she's not saying she hates them or anything. She loves her mom and to a lesser extent her sister, but she's already at a point where she can't just pick up where she left off with them. She's already created a life without them as the center, and while it might sound cold to say, she's not going to abandon everything just because things are conveniently turning for the better.

After explaining this to her mom and sister in both French and English, Freddy appears to mull this over and then stands up from the bench. She takes an exaggerated stretch and then turns to her older daughter with a small smile and asks why she should be upset? Her daughter has moved on from being a girl to a woman with her own interests and life. Although she's a bit sad that she doesn't want to come to spend time with her, she's also not the type of mom who wants an overly needy child. She won't chase who leaves but will offer a place to whom offers to come. It just means she'll just dote on Amelie twice as much, is all. Freddy turns to Meifa and in heavily accented English tells her to come along, that her sister is staying. Meifa nods and as soon as Freddy is out of earshot, turns to Karol and tells her to be sure to write and visit at least once in a while, or she will have her ass. Karol makes a face and points at Freddy who has already given a guy a chest blow for trying to touch her ass. She states that she is her mom, not Meifa. The two sisters glare at each other again before Karol sighs and promises to drop a letter every so often, and if her work brings her close to or within France she will stop over. Meifa grins and nods, and the two sisters embrace again.

Paola, Ricky and Meifa's partners from Sector seven watch the scene and wistfully wish to see their own mothers again, even if just to let them know they're doing okay. With a long sigh they all in unison complain about how there's nothing to do today.

Meanwhile in an elevator in a hotel both far and near the protagonists, one Edmund Wargle makes his way up to one of the more expensive suites. Normally this man works with Lady's group of vigilantes against Penbur's World destruction theorem, but considering he's here and Lady is not clearly he has his own vendetta unknown to his boss. Wargle glances around the elevator pensively, while checking his watch. It had been a chore to break free from Lady's watchful gaze which had in turn made him late for this meeting with someone else. Considering his behavior, this person must not be a big fan of tardiness, and must have enough authority to cause him to sweat about it. Finally reaching his floor, Wargle strides over to room 1408 only giving himself a moment to muse at the number being the same as the hotel in 'The shining'. He knocks once, and upon receiving no answer excuses himself and enters.

Inside he notes the well furnished room and admires the view of the city stretched below the hotel. He turns quickly to the bed room and finds there a sight both better and worse than what he had seen so far today.

Inside is a girl, older than sixteen but not yet twenty one lying down. She's dressed in what appears to be nothing more than a men's dress shirt and panties, the shirt being about two sizes too big. Upon Wargle's entry she sits up in bed slowly and sleepily says his name. He nods to her and she sits up completely to reveal that the shirt is dangerously close to revealing some skin, and upon rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, Wargle is able to tell she is of Asian descent. He asks who she is, and she stakes with a sleepy drawl and a small grin that she is 'Mugen'.

A few moments later, Wargle sits in the 'living room', sipping sparkling wine from a fancy glass. The girl walks into the room, still in the same state of dress and pours herself a glass, and then sits at the counter behind Wargle on a kitchen stool. Her purple eyes are the definition of innocence as she pours the wine in and 'oohs and aahs' as it bubbles in the glass. Her legs swing up and down in the air, and she hums a tune until Wargle finally speaks up and asks if she's really Mugen. He admits he doesn't know much about 'Satan's child', but he wasn't expecting a woman, nay....a girl.

Without taking her attention from the glass the girl asks him really to think about that statement. People are really slow and clumsy creatures, rooted in their beliefs and customs to a point that they eschew reality to fit neatly into their mundane lives. He's claiming he didn't expect her to me a girl, but she hadn't at all left any 'clues' or 'hints' to suggest otherwise had she? He has an 'idea' of how someone with her MO is supposed to look, behave, and be born as. To expect the unexpected is just what people say to help themselves sleep at night when they miss the obvious.

She knocks over the glass and grins at him. Look at him for example, would anyone expect a mild mannered British man to be one of the most notorious serial killers ever seen in Wales? His whole MO is the fact that he looks like he belongs in a library or opposite some starlet in a American theater. She however wasn't fooled by him, because she doesn't expect the unexpected or change reality to suit what benefits her. Oh sure she will change reality soon enough, but that will be through blood, violence, and generous amounts of psychological torture.

Wargle paradoxically begins to understand less and more as the girl continues to talk. For one thing he doesn't doubt that she's Mugen now, despite being so...innocent looking and sounding. She really is as evil as she was the day he met her. Or is this truly evil? Is this just an innocence so warped, so distorted that it is in fact paradoxically morally bankrupt? This girl hadn't been acting as Mugen, nor was she some kind of mental 'shelter' from the things she had done....no, this couldn't be explained by mental illness. The girl who sits in front of him now is the true Mugen. Which means she would be infinitely more fearsome than the one he had been used to dealing with. Infinitely more fearsome and...interesting.

The girl turns from her chair and bounds over to the back of Wargle's sofa and asks how Lady is doing. She's still trying to destroy all traces of Penbur's world destruction theorem isn't she? She leans over and looks into Wargle's eyes as he sips the wine. After receiving no response, she leaps over onto the couch and sits beside him resting her legs in his lap with a thud. He seems not to notice, but asks her in a very curt voice to move her legs. The girl grins and in a childlike tone asks him to make her, to which Wargle sighs and asks if tiredly if he tells her what Lady is doing now will she move her legs? The girl makes a happy sound and nods.

He clears his throat and reveals that Lady is planning to scope er---snipe Luchiano at a gathering for the ones fallen during the war with Asahara. Although Penbur had fallen out of ranks with the gangster, he still has some knowledge of the WD theorem and was planning to use it to his own gain. Lady being who she is wouldn't stand for it and plans to add one more coffin to the ceremony. The girl opens her mouth in an 'O' shape and whistles, claiming her luck is really good then. She had wondered how she'd persuade the Mafia to help, and this would be the perfect way. She lifts her legs in the air as promised, but surprises Wargle by slipping her panties off and tossing them on the side. With a grin she admits as 'Mugen' she had gotten too used to wearing boxers and going back to girls underwear would be a slow process. She swings around and stands up the sudden movements giving Wargle a clear view of her naughty areas.

Sitting on the opposite couch and crossing her legs in a nod to 'Basic instinct' the girl suddenly asks Wargle why he's a killer instead of a reputable member of society. He blinks and raises an eyebrow to which the girl tilts her head and smiles. Wargle states that he has a fascination with equality. He then asks the girl that the most equal thing among human beings are death. Kings have to die, paupers have to die, the affluent have to die, the poor have to die. Which means by extensions if he is handing out death, he is a God. One who delivers death but does not fear it. He balances what is uneven, creates equality where there is none. The girl who has leaned in and has an expression of fascination flops backwards and with a shout of glee admits that no matter how many times he tells her that, she never tires of hearing it. It's the reason why she had decided to enlist his help; he isn't one of those nobodies that want peace 'cause it's what everyone else wants. She suddenly stands, remembering that she hasn't introduced the true 'her'.

Since her hands are completely obscured by the shirt, the girl has to roll them up before turning to Wargle. Hand outstretched, purple eyes gleaming with excitement and (apparently) nothing else, she states her name; Matilde Ngai. She giggles as she grins and adds a 'pleased to work with you!'. Wargle hesitates a minute before taking her hand and replies in kind. He really does feel like that this time he's made a deal with the devil. After their re-introduction is complete, Matilde strolls over to the couch and plops down, allowing Wargle yet another look at her exposed crotch. She then blushes and covers her shame, to which Wargle turns away from. She pouts and expresses her disappointment. She acted as he expected and he reacted as society demands. Truth is she could care less about her body since she doesn't expect to die the sort of death that will allow it to remain intact. In fact she hopes she doesn't. It would be sooo boring, she adds with a girlish 'teehee'. Matilde then adds that Lukas Diethel is the same as the two of them; a person who had gotten a taste of the extraordinary. He wouldn't be able to find himself able to fit back in with the ordinary...he would yearn for danger and excitement again, something he won't be able to get now that he's being booted out of the govt. The major difference between him and her, is he's able to hold on to this 'yearning' without giving up his sense of 'self'. Therefore, she had decided to 'retire' Mugen, and embrace her 'self'. Lukas would want his team back together enough possibly to team up with her, could she provide it, which would be useful to her later on. Though with so many enemies she would have to find a means to keep them alive until she could make a reunion happen, which leads to her master plan to 'protect' and 'preserve' Sector seven using all means necessary. She turns to Wargle who despite his surprise nods, and says he's in for the long haul. He then asks her to answer one question for him....he had told her the method to his madness, but what about her? The path she's taking will lead straight to hell, taking the fast roads known as tragedy and despair. Certainly she has a reason for going through all this trouble, right?

Matilde's face frowns up thoughtfully and she rolls over on the couch so that her bare feet are in the air. She makes a cute thoughtful noises while air peddling her feet, while Wargle contains his lustful fantasies. Finally she turns on her stomach and says she can't think of a reason, though if it makes Wargle happy she'll make up one. She rests her head on her arms and sticking out her tongue replies to his question with a simple answer.  'To kill time'.
