This is a summary of WD Rule two.
OP: From all our base with love.
ED: Midnight express.
Rules Covered: 2-4.
Disclaimer: If you're squeamish about teenagers cursing, heads asploding, and general disregard for the gift of life, this series is not for you.
A suitcase. Perhaps the epitome of 'hush hush' information exchanges. Whenever thug A hands thug B a suitcase, there's usually something illegal going down. Here, it's paper in the suitcase. Not the type that'll buy a girl named Betty for the whole night, but the type that could very well destroy the world.
...Yes you heard that right....
In any case, thug A does his thing and hands thug B the suitcase. Thug B looks inside, and likes what he sees. He is about to give a pleased nod to thug A, but the thing is that he is far too busy showing off the new bullet that was suddenly lodged in his brain. A few more of the magic bullets from some far away location (Probably Shangrila.) rain down on thug B, and he is got no choice but to run as fast as his beady little legs will carry him. A sniper hangs out a few yards away, and prepares yet another round to pump into thug B. That is until mighty yell is heard, and he is smacked in the back of the head with a pair of red tennis shoes that have a teenage girl attached to them. After stealing the sniper's manhood, the girl peers into the window and sees that thug B has managed to get away, along with the other sniper. She murmurs the word 'shit' a few times, before a cell phone on her belt vibrates and she picks it up.
Her purple and gold eyes glower with anger as she reports that the target and the second sniper has managed to get away. The person on the phone seems less angry, and tells her that she can return now. The girl has no intention of going anywhere until her mission is finished. The voice on the phone tries to resist her for a bit, but she finally wins out. The voice asks if she'd at least like back up, and she replies that she's never used it before, and probably never will. She then jumps down a vent, darts off the scene.
Now the story switches to that of our brilliant, kind hearted, and honest protagonist who is using his penchant for never forgetting things to con his classmates for test answers that he got by staying after class and pretending to help the teachers. (Ironic run on sentences for the win?) Why for a mere 30 bucks a test, one could get all the way through High school!
Other than his ability to never forget, Lukas Diethel is a rather normal 15 year old student. It's because of his ability however, that he's unable to find school frustrating enough to fight back images of glamorous life. He leaves school that day, just like any other day wondering if life is simply a chain of waking up when one doesn't want to, going to school when one doesn't need to, and dying just when it gets to the good part. He makes the mistake however of complaining about his frustrating life position out loud however, and in less than a few minutes he's surrounded.
Aliens, Girls from other dimensions, Hagrid, and other cliched first chapter plot points all surround him like a biker gang from neo hell. Lukas puts his hands up and explains clearly that he hoped for something a bit less...cliched. They draw a bit closer, he moves backwards a bit. This cycle continues until he finally just turns and runs as fast as he can. They pursue him, knowing that only one will be known as the one who helped the teen who saved the world.
Its strange how with all this running going on, not a single person helps Lukas out. Aliens? Hagrid? Come on now people, you'd think someone would at least take a picture. In any case, he runs as fast as he can, and ducks into an alley until they all disappear. Breathing a heavy sigh, Lukas looks both ways and begins to walk again....until he's hit by another person running from something. The man flips over and lands on his back, watching as his suitcase opens and the papers inside flutter out. Lukas bemoans his luck, and then takes pity on the man. At least one of them should have decent day. He starts to help him pick up the papers, until one catches his eye. He stares at it briefly. It's short, probably six Xeroxed pages, and has what seems to be very difficult math. What has captured Lukas's eye is the last page, that states in very small letters that this is the 'End of the World'. Now what would a guy like this be doing with a formula that seems to be so dangerous?
The man grabs the paper and begins to run again however, so Lukas is only left with his thoughts. He shrugs and it's about to leave when he hears a gunshot. Turning around quickly, the man falls right on top of him again, and he groans that this is too much same sex contact for his own good. Lukas feels something warm, and lifts his hand. It's blood. Gooey, creepy, sticky blood. He stares over at the man and sees that he's got a new earring, stamped with love by a sniper. He scrambles away from the grim reaper's new employee, and breathes heavily. Did someone just die in front of him?! Suddenly, an alien owl chick from Hogwarts didn't sound so bad....
A voice above him comments that it would be nice if this were only the first head that asploded in front of them this morning. Lukas blinks before turning attention above. Did this person just pronounce 'explode' as 'asplode'? Suddenly this guy's death didn't just seem meaningless, but hilarious to boot. He turns to see what kind of guy would make a comment like that, to see a long haired person hanging upside down from a lamp post. Apparently the kind of guy that would joke about this kind of thing is a girl. Though with her voice and physique, she could pass for a guy anywhere. She hops down from the light, and examines the red and wet paper. Lukas begins to edge away from the strange girl, but she catches him and asks if he's read any of the papers. Before he can answer though, a gunshot nearly hits the two of them. The girl tells him to hold on, and she puts a hand on her forehead as a sun visor. She locks eyes with something, and then kicking a trash can in mid air, slams it into a building window nearby with a second kick. She announces that 'if you start shit with the queen bee, you're going to get stung.' Lukas suddenly thinks that finding a confessional and admitting his wrong doings would be a really good idea right now. After all, for some reason, Satan had descended right in front of him right? She turns yet again to him and asks if he read the papers.
Lukas would never lie to get out of trouble, as he believes that taking responsibility for being caught is the right thing to do. If you don't want to take responsibility, don't get caught, or don't do it in the first place. Something deep within him, past the heart and somewhere above the sphincter, however tells him that getting involved with this scary girl isn't such a good idea. So he decides to tell a fib in hopes that she'll let him go. She seems okay with this at first, an he prepares to leave....but then she grabs his back and with a balled up fist, gives him a chest abortion so hard that he blacks out on impact. The only memory he has before being embraced by the sweet sweet pavement is that her eyes are two different colors. One purple, and one gold.
After Lukas has been put to bed, the girl returns the phone call she got earlier, and confirms that the papers have been destroyed. She goes on to state that a civilian got involved, and read the formula. The voice on the other end of the phone sighs, and then asks Meifa to bring the civilian in. It then also requests that she stop kicking him as they talk. True enough, the girl had been kicking Lukas in the chest as she reported her findings. She complains that he lied to her, and the voice admits that all men are liars. Except for itself, Michael Jordan, Colonel Sanders and Larry the Cable guy. It then asks Meifa to be careful, and wait for her ride to arrive. Meifa does as she's told, not before giving Lukas one more swift kick to the face; breaking his glasses in the process.
Lukas wakes up in a dark room, his lack of glasses not helping things. He gathers his wits, and then takes stock of himself. Ten fingers? check. Ten toes? Check check. And now the lighting round question! Why is he strapped to a bed with a guy welding a Chainsaw staring at him with a look that totally says 'lunch time?' The man blinks a few times and sighs, turning the lights on in the process. He complains about the mood being slaughtered (in which Lukas wonders about his use of the word 'slaughtered') and then turns to him. He then asks Lukas if he's ever thought about how he'd like to die. Lukas retorts that he'd like more time to think about it, say sixty to seventy years? The man laughs and remarks that no one actually lives that long. Lukas says that he'd like to try. The man admits that this is going on a bit longer than he had originally planned, so he offers his hand and introduces himself as Jaxon Murray. Lukas stares at him (both out of shock and being unable to see anything other than fuzzy shapes.) And asks why he'd possibly want to kill him. Jaxon goes on to state that most of his friends call him Jax, in which Lukas asks 'Jaxon' very slowly why he wanted to kill him.
Suddenly a familiar voice chimes in. Lukas sits up, (as best as he can since he's still tied down.) And sees the girl from earlier, eating a sandwich and talking with her mouth full. She thinks that they should just kill him and see a movie. She walks into the room, and Lukas takes note of the sounds of her feet on the floor, as she's barefoot. Jax introduces her as Meifa Kamijou, an employee of their 'store'. Lukas glowers at Jax, who obviously avoiding his question. Meifa points out that he's a lying shit, and should get a messy death. Jax glances over at Lukas, rubbing his chin stubble and weighing what Meifa said. Lukas struggles and says that he only lied because she was going to hurt him....which she did! He then stops for a minute and looks at her. Meifa becomes annoyed and asks what he's looking at, and threatens him with another ass beating.
Lukas responds, stating that she's a very lonely young lady. He has to assume some things because of his lack of eye wear, but rationalizes that she is a girl who was brought up by men who mean well, but because they're fairly new to raising kids themselves had left her to her own devices, hense her being unruly. People who have never had extended parental contact, break down into two categories. One who believes everything they hear, and the other who believes nothing. She's obviously the former, which explains why she's so bent out of shape over a small white lie. Parents teach the difference between lying and and being lied to, which means she's had to find out through trial and error on her own, and as with many of life's self taught lessons, it can be really painful to find out that you're wrong. Most of all, she spends a lot of time alone. This is evidenced from the fact that she is barefoot in a place where people would at least adorn house slippers. He surmises that her room is probably really messy because she spends a lot of time there alone, not even having friends to clean up for or after.
Jax is genuinely impressed by Lukas's dead on analysis of a girl he not only just met, but can barely see. Meifa on the other hand is genuinely pissed, and moves to kill him herself. Jax shows a sudden burst of responsibility, and tells Meifa in a stern voice to stop. She's surprised by this and scowls, storming out of the room. Jax apologies to Lukas, and slowly admits that he's right on. Meifa's sort of his ward, but he's really no good at knowing how to take care of her properly. He asks Lukas how he could have known, and Lukas admits that he's just got a knack for human psychology. He read a book a few years ago about it, and can even recite the publisher's address on command. Jax then says that this is the reason why he would have had to kill him.
Lukas is in the cafeteria of the huge compound, taking small slurps of a soup that he has no appetite for. Jax had bought him lunch, but hadn't explained why he's here in the first place......or what 'here' is. Lukas had asked a few people out of curiosity, but they had all said the same thing in varying degrees. 'A store.' Somebody had even offered to call his parents to pick him up. Lukas doesn't mind if they don't want to tell him the truth, but couldn't they at LEAST give his intelligence the benefit of the doubt here? What kind of store could this possibly be? It looks more like a secret governme--
Government Compound for information gathering. Is how Jax begins his next sentence. Lukas blinks and asks what he means by that. He starts to go into the depths of their construction, and their team motto of 'more casual days and less casualties' but Lukas cuts in and asks for a fifth time.....why would they want him dead?
Jax blinks a few times, and tries to convince him to listen to Section Seven's history. Lukas persists in wanting to know why he has to die. Jax then turns to the audience and apologizes, as he would like to talk about what they do in Section Seven, maybe have a few laughs at the Government's expense, but they have to honor the wishes of the protagonist. Maybe someday, somewhere they'd finally be able to discuss the section in detail....Lukas frowns and tells Jax not to make him out to be the bad guy. He has a right to know why his life is in a precarious situation.
Jax asks if he knows a man named 'Arthur Penbur.' Lukas recalls the name a little bit, but can't quite put his finger on where he might have heard it before. Jax helps him by saying that this is the name of a famous scientist, credited with advances in nuclear physics that had put their country on the map. It's then that the teen remembers hearing about Penbur, although it was his disappearance four years ago that has the media scrambling even today. Jax asks Lukas if he's at all curious of why Penury disappeared. Lukas is, and he continues. Apparently Penbur had either created or stumbled on a theory....a theory that could destroy the world. Other scientists had seen this theory, and seemingly agreed that it could work theoretically. Lukas asks why Jax seems so...uncertain, but then realizes that the world isn't a smoldering husk, so no one is truly sure if the theory is actually the real deal. Jax then states that Penbur's work was supposed to be top secret, but apparently someone let the cat out of the bag. It wasn't long after that shady people wanted to have this code for themselves, and targeted anyone that was connected to Penbur at the time.
...After a while, it became easier to count the people dead, than the ones alive. Penbur soon became the man with the touch of death, since anyone he became close to would soon find themselves pushing up daisies. Eventually he just disappeared into the darkness never to be seen again. His theorem however exists, being passed down from person to person. Section Seven had just managed to find one more copy of his theorem on the black market, and pursued it. This copy would be the one that Lukas had read, and the thug had lost his life for. It had been destroyed of course, but now the problem is that he knows this very dangerous information.
It starts to dawn on Lukas why he'd be shortlisted for death, and he asks is there's any other way to get what they need from him. Couldn't they like erase that part of his memory or something? Jax admits to trying that before determining death was the best alternative. Lukas then asks Jax if he's ever read the theorem. Jax quickly says he hasn't and that he never wants to. Faaaar too much trouble. Lukas thinks than then asks Jax if he has any proof that the theorem exist. Jax in turn flips the question back to Lukas, and asks him if what he saw. Lukas backs down, and Jax sips on his drink. He then reveals that he's changed his mind on killing or harming Lukas, noting that he's still impressed with Lukas's analysis of Meifa. It would be a real shame to lose a boy with his intelligence because of a technicality. He read the codes, but he can't comprehend them that well right? That would be his loop hole. He wouldn't be considered dangerous as long as he doesn't blab to the supervisors.
Lukas admits that it's tempting to take Jax on his deal, as he's living by himself, but the idea of working with Meifa still frightens him more than a root canal given by Frankenstein. He lies and says he wants to think about it (although he really just wants to go home.) , he then leaves the room, hoping not to run into Meifa on the way back. Unfortunately nature calls, and he has to stop and find a bathroom. He finds what seems to be a lavatory and begins to open the door, when he realizes that this is the perfect situation for some accidental nudity to take place. If Meifa would kick his face in over lying, who knows what she would do if he saw her undressed? Lukas decides to take the high road, and look for another bathroom. Or at least he would, but the door is propped open slightly, and he apparently hasn't had enough near death experiences for the day.....so he peeks in.
Inside Meifa is looking into a mirror with a toothbrush in her mouth. (Lukas assumes it is, since he can't see and it sounds like she has something in her mouth.) She mumbles to herself that she isn't lonely, and wonders how he could tell stuff about her when she didn't say anything. She sighs and looks into the mirror sadly. There's something about being confronted with the truth that makes it much harder to deal with....
Against his better judgement, Lukas walks into the bathroom and stands beside Meifa. Before she can stab him in the eye with the toothbrush (yes it IS a toothbrush.) He tells her that he has no parents either. Well..technically. He has no idea where his Mother is, and his Dad....well he dislikes him. He's heard of what his Dad does, and Lukas would rather not think about him. He lived with family members for a while, until he landed an apartment of his own. His Dad had been nice enough to have a fund set up for him, so he just uses the money from that to pay for room and board. However, he made a promise to himself that once he lands a job, he'd stop using his Dad's money and live using his own means.
When Meifa asks Lukas what his story has to do with anything, he replies that parents don't make a person good or bad, they do. That of course doesn't mean that Parents are completely useless, as it's nice to have someone to comfort you, to teach you, to protect you......
Meifa nods in silent agreement, and Lukas notes that she's not too bad when her foot isn't in his face. He then sighs and makes a statement that he's sure will go down in infamy. He promises to protect Meifa in place of her parents. She stares at him, trying to ascertain how serious that statement is. When she finds that there's no fallacy in his words, she asks if he really will protect her. Lukas nods, and apologizes for putting her business out in the open before. He figures the least he can do is assure her safety as long as he's here. He also apologizes for lying, and promises to be honest with her for now on. Meifa tells him that she doesn't want a weakling to protect her, but if it makes him feel better, she'll allow it for now. With this, the two shake on their agreement.
The next day, Lukas stands before Jax with his decision. Meifa is in the room listening in as well, and is surprised when Lukas agrees to stay with Sector Seven. He does have some stipulations though. One is that he wants to continue going to school as usual without any surveillance, and the second is that he wants to work with Meifa and Sector Seven, rather than being protected by them. In short, he wants to become a spy too.
Jax smiles, and says that he can arrange for those things to happen....but is Lukas sure he wants this responsibility? He'll be paired up with Meifa after all.....
Lukas returns Jax's smile with one of his own, saying that he and Meifa have a deal in place....an offer that he can't refuse. Meifa glances over at Lukas, her bored expression giving birth to one of genuine surprise and concern. Does he know what he's getting into...?
