A silent Assassin, like the diabetes that comes if you eat of the above.

Devious, appearing as a specter of past lives

In the mirror each morning as shower steam hisses.

Barely hiding the fact that it’s sad when all you do in life is live.

Hate me, betray me, but I’m a shelter open twenty four hours.

Parents who know their child will be back, you’ll never outgrow me.

Except not, as I live in the shadow of every overpass, every fallen,

An extension of the shadow of the valley of death.

Watching you at all times.

More active in your life than any of your family or any religion.

I exist as every bad neighborhood that passes by

Before high class schools and libraries.

I am your first and only teacher.

The reason why tears and sweat shed after working

Are the jewels that poets and preachers capture in lyric and sermon.

When you’ve finally managed to pass me

And can feel the tender grip of a lucid dream…

Never thank me.

For I will always be selfish and stubborn.

As this world is mine,

You’re just borrowing it from me.
