This is a summary of Greyashe Episode 36.

OP: the dropouts.

ED: Chime.

Chapters covered: 81 & 82

Kani metaphorically has her ears to the ground, listening and watching Aschner closely.  Her suspicions of the headmaster had started back when she, Guy and Adele were in the room under the school. Although she has no hard evidence that he is connected to any of the events before during or after the 'God' had been released, both her intuition as a WITCH and woman tell her not to drop her guard around him. For one thing, he is being far too accommodating towards them, since they had been sheltering GMAGY's natural enemy after all. He had even told the masses that he would 'supervise' Claire himself! Kani hates the fact that she has to be the skeptic in the party, but 'better safe than sorry' is not just a saying for her, but an iron clad rule. Since she can't preform magic, she has perfected the art of espionage, allowing her to follow Aschner closely as he makes his rounds of the school without being caught.

Or so she thinks.

Something nags at the young witch, something small -minor enough to be forgotten by even expert 'shadows'. Aschner doesn't notice her....which is very suspicious. While he might be a simple headmaster at present, back in his heyday he was a solider who was feared by friend and foe alike. She has plenty of self confidence, but it's strange that he'd allow a girl like herself to trail him, and so easily at that. This nags at her so much that she wants to give up the surveillance, but she continues for the greater good. The headmaster is up to something, and it could very well be trouble for her friends.

Student life has returned to normal for the most part at GMAGY...as normal as life can be after a new God was born and indirectly declared war on their peaceful way of living. Classes are being held on a 'come if you wish' basis, as students and teachers alike are still shaken by the events, and find attending classes something of a hardship. Cayden is getting used to being an actual lone wolf, rather than the one he portrayed when his friends and the girl he has a crush on were around. Different feelings bubble and ebb within him, ranging from abandonment to self loathing. He should have gone with them, he should have. Whenever he thinks deeply about it though, he remembers Harrow's eyes as he reminded the ice user that Iselia would need someone at home to return to. It starts to dawn on him that Harrow never mentioned coming home too...

Suddenly Cayden finds that his left leg has hooked up with a foreign object, and his whole body takes the blame for it's infidelity as he falls to the floor.  He turns around and isn't surprised to see Adele standing with his leg out, and a huge grin on his face. The tutor asks how the weather is down there, following up with an inquiry to if he knew that 'fall' was coming this early. Cayden grits his teeth, and asks if his tutor would like winter to come early this year too, because he can arrange that. Before he can carry through his threat, polite giggling ransacks his consciousness. Adele turns around, and apologizes to a petite girl behind him. He assures her that the students of this school aren't all like the fool on the floor, and that Cayden's main job is to direct people to where the bottom of the class is.

Cayden turns away from the two of them and mutters about how Adele's true calling is ruining moments. He then asks -without turning around, who the new girl is. The tutor introduces her as Azha Falk; a new transfer student. He adds that she should have begun classes a few days ago, but a clerical error kept her waiting for a bit longer.

Azha curtsies, and with a voice like a soft and dreamy lullaby lets Mr Cayden know that she hopes to learn and have fun while attending GMAGY. Her pink hair flows slightly past her shoulders, and green eyes house gentleness with a slight mischievousness within them.  She's probably no more than one or two years younger than Cayden, but due to her small stature, he almost towers over her when he gets to his feet. Cayden's face turns red, and he tells this junior that the 'Mr' isn't necessary. Azha nods, and Adele clears his throat. He has paper work to do, and calls to make, so he figures that since Cayden is just moping around anyway, that he can show Azha around. He starts to object, but Azha insists that Cayden be the one to lead her around. Unable to say no to her request, Cayden sighs and tells her to keep up with him. Just as the two start off, Adele and Cayden exchange glances. Cayden would never say it out loud, but he secretly thanks his tutor for helping him get his mind off Iselia.....but did it have to be another girl? This isn't going to change things, and he could be sure of that. Adele nods as if he understood this eye contact conversation, and smiles engmatically. Cayden growls, as he HATES that. Azha on the other hand watches both men, a cute smile with all sorts of meaning creeping up her face.

Guy is escorted into the room by two guards. 'Escorted' in the sense of being thrown back into the room after trying to sneak off the premises for the third time that day. He complains out loud that he can't smoke in the same room with someone who's sick, in which the guards callously reply that he should quit anyway. Guy enacts his rights with a few obscene hand gestures, but the guards pay him no mind and leave. Van watches the whole spectacle with a sheepish grin, and then turns to Claire and asks if she feels the same way Guy does.

Claire however seems to have zoned out, and stares at her legs. Van waves his hand in front of her face, and she snaps to attention, claiming that she didn't miss anything. Van blinks and asks if she's okay, as she's been zoning in and out since her fight with the 'God'. Claire bunches up the sheets and hides behind them, an endearing display that causes the boy to worry more and less about her. He then offers his hand to her, and asks if she'd like to walk around the campus. Claire looks up at him, her eyes still devoid of any light or feeling. Van doesn't seem to be afraid of these eyes at all....she thinks to her self. After a moment of silence, she slides out of bed and into a pair of slippers. She agrees to the invitation on two conditions. She wants sunglasses to wear, and only Van is allowed to come with her. Guy fumes for a bit, but agrees to stay in the room on the condition that Van finds out when the hell they get to leave. Van agrees to everyone's stipulations, and its only at this moment that he notices Kani isn't among them. Guy figures she went to take a leak, since she's pretty good at telling them where she's going most of the time. Women never like others to know that they have to go after all. Van wonders about the validity of this statement until Claire drags him out of the room.

The two walk until they find themselves outside of their dorm/holding cell. The flowers are in full bloom, and the evening sun retreats with cautious optimism into the sky. Van takes in the sights before wondering how long this will last with the 'God' out there? Surely even he had to appreciate an afternoon like this enough to keep from disrupting it, right? Claire turns to Van and without hesitation asks...

'What God are you talking about'?

Van stares at her out of shock for a moment, and asks her to repeat her question. She narrows her eyes and replies irritated that she didn't ask a hard question, it's just that since earlier Van has been talking about this 'God', and she'd like to know who he is. When the boy only replies with silence, Claire realizes something is amiss. Van clenches his fists and demands the truth from his friend. He wants to know what she can remember about....anything up until now.

Claire's eyes dart back and forth, trying to find a way out of this situation. She replies that she didn't mean anything by the question, and that Van should stop acting like this. She's never seen him this angry before...

Van mutters that he understands now. It's either that she doesn't remember much, or her memories come and go. He grips her shoulders and meets her eye to eye. The boy then recalls what had happened to them when they were separated in Auysdin, and when they met each other again. He was angry with her then too, so how can she say she's never seen him this way before?

Claire tries to stammer a reply, but realizes she's been caught. Her voice begins to break as she confirms Van's suspicions, that her memory comes and goes. She admits that she's scared now, scared that she'll forget their journey, their friends, and most of all...

Him.

The farseer gently embraces her and it's then that the tears flow from the goddess killer's eyes. Van promises that he'll find a way to restore her memories, so until then, she has to promise to remember him. Claire nods and the two lock pinkies as a pact.

Night has descended when Kani finally decides to drop the charade and head to Aschner's office. If he's truly innocent, this would be the fastest way to find out. The witch feels some unease, going up against an opponent at his caliber without any weapons, but all of her property had been confiscated. She would have to hope that quick reflexes and thinking would save her if Aschner should become violent.

Two knocks and an approval later, Kani is inside of the headmaster's office. She glances around for exit routes, and despairs when she notes the only window is behind his desk. Aschner's office is wide, but he keeps his space narrow; a modest desk, and only a few medals of honor and pictures of fellow soldiers decorate the room. Even though he had approved her entry, Aschner still looks surprised to see the witch when she enters the room. He removes his small rimmed glasses and places the paper he was reading on his desk upon her entry. His deep voice, and direct manner of speech is the hallmark of a man who served in the military, and had several serve under him. It is obvious as well that he hopes to intimidate Kani into silence, but she's far too stubborn to let him get to her.

Kani thanks the headmaster for his gracious decision to let them stay in GMAGY, and apologizes for her abrupt appearance.  Aschner nods at this, and replies that he knows of her through her master....a WITCH without equal.

Kani is taken aback by this, she didn't expect Aschner to have done his homework on her.....or she did, but not to that extent and so quickly! She responds in stride, and thanks him for his kind words; and without wasting any time, asks what his intentions are with her group. Aschner raises an eyebrow, and replies that the higher ups haven't sent him any orders to detain them indefinitely, so using his discretion, he will probably release them in a day or two. Kani doesn't take her eyes off of him as she asks the next question, would he be letting all of them leave. The headmaster is silent, as if he is deciding whether to humor or destroy the young lady, and after a moment decides on the former. He asks what she means by her comment, and Kani is more than happy to deliver. She bluntly states that she finds it strange that he'd house his enemy, and not even attempt to interrogate any of them. Besides that, he has to know what Van's true nature is, and even if he doesn't know that, he would have to know what happened in Ausdyin at a certain jail. Lastly, she points out that she finds it strange he'd have a 'God' in his basement without having any knowledge whatsoever.  In conclusion, Aschner reeks of suspicion; and although Kani doesn't really care about his indiscretions, she won't stand by if he plans on doing anything to harm her friends.

Aschner crosses his arms and leans back in his chair. He asks the witch if she has any proof to back up her claims, and when she replies that she doesn't, he cackles and asks if she's gone mad. Her words, all of them could be considered an affront to GMAGY and it's sister organization the WITCHES. He knows that she's a traitor, and with one phone call, he could have her erased. Kani remains unfhased, and asks if Aschner is proud of himself? That the only way he can proove his self worth is to kidnap a sick girl? Aschner points out that the goddess killer has ended several lives, to which Kani responds with his several 'accomplishments' in the military. Claire is no angel, but compared to him, he is the devil incarnate. The headmaster stands up snarling, asking Kani if she has a death wish. Kani narrows her eyes, and in a spiteful tone replies that he's now affronting her. Aschner claims that what he wants to do with the goddess killer is his buisness, as she is on his property. If he wants to dress her, feed her, or even kill her, it is up to his whim.

With unheard of speed, he crosses the desk and is standing in front of Kani. He states that at least the goddess killer is useful to him, unlike a WITCH that can't preform magic. Kani's eyes widen in fear an anger, when suddenly Aschner stops in his tracks and looks behind her.

Van stands his arms at his sides, and his face hidden by his hat and hair. His voice trembles with anger as he makes bold strides over to Aschner. He confirms that he knew something was strange with the Headmaster's kindness towards them, and that Claire wouldn't be let off the hook so easily. This however, isn't something he can over look. If he had come a few seconds later, Kani would have gotten hurt or worse. In addition, he had plans for hurting Claire as well.

Van glares at the headmaster, unbridled hate flowing from his eyes. He's forgiven plenty during his journey, but this he can not and will not forgive. Here and now, he will defeat Aschner and take Claire with him.
